Welcome back! In this ‘part 2′ of the previous show, we talk about YouTube, Yahoo Video, smiling when you talk, the Expo, not going to the Expo, who’s going to the Expo, and poking a stick at Paul Colligan. Also, Dave Shepherd goes all der wienerschnitzel on our butts as he corrects our misguided and unwelcome mispronunciations of German Podcast angel Annik Rubens’”Schlaflos en munchen” podcast. Furthermore, Joel Ross corrects our Windows Media Player playback speed misconception. Addtionally, we know some things. Lastly, Scott whores himself and suggests that you buy some useless Podcheck crap at Cafe Press.
It’s the mundane news, jazzed up with some music beds, and spritzed with just a hint of lemon. Its another Podcheck Review!
The secret of life in essay form after the jump…
Jeff: Not very well publicized, NBC has put up more TV shows on iTunes. Shows like “NBC News Specials”, “Meet The Presidents with Tim Russert”, “Dateline, Crime and Punishment” and several others. Prices are $1.99 each
COM: Is this a sign that more pay-for-audio and video is coming? For me, the “law” of the web has always been – once they start making me pay, find alternative free content. So far that’s worked with very few exceptions (I do pay for Salon magazine)
Scott: Rob from Podcast411 just interviewed Ronald Moore, the producer of the official Battlestar Galactica podcast, and co-producer of the series. I’ve said before that the real story behind podcasts and video casts is the intimate and out-of-channel intimacy that shows and hosts can achieve. Ron fosters and feeds the BSG fans, and builds incredible loyalty. — Also, imagine EVERY major show having its own director’s commentary - Law & Order, Desperate Housewives, Lost, etc.

We talked about how you can now subscribe to commercials with your TiVo? box, and how advertisers are hungry for new ways to ensure that people are watching commercials:
From BoingBoing?

CBS is launching a web/TV game this autumn that requires players to monitor programs and commercials to win up to $2 million in prizes. The network has taken this on as part of the challenge of getting viewers to watch ads in an era of PVRs with commercial-skipping capability. ABC has done something similar during the commercials for Lost.
It’s great to see the networks applying some creativity to the problem of surviving technological change — it’s a welcome switch from their tactic to date, which is whining in court about the big bad PVR makers who naughtily allow viewers to control what’s on their own TVs.
NBC’s popular sitcom “The Office,” for example, put together fake public-service announcements that mimic NBC’s own “The More You Know,” a series of PSAs featuring actors, writers and directors delivering the messages. Because “The Office” PSAs so closely resembled actual PSAs, viewers did not realize they were fake until the announcement series took a bizarre, humorous turn. The fake PSAs also can be viewed for free on “The Office” Web site. An ad streams silently next to the video while you watch it.
In this case, an advertiser who places a spot next to the online version of the PSA can claim at least one advantage over the advertisers flanking the same PSA on television. Thanks to online tracking software, it’s relatively easy to obtain demographic information on the viewers who click on the online PSA video, while the television advertisers flanking the same PSA during a commercial break have much less precise information about who was reached. The ANA/Forrester report found that 97 percent of advertisers wanted better measurement of audience viewership for actual commercials, not just a TV program ratings system.

Now, you can get free airtime minutes from Virgin Mobile by watching ads. SugaMo?ma or something like that? You definitely know who’ll be watching the ads. The people who are willing to suffer through watching ads in front of theor computers in return for a few scan minutes of talk time! Probably teenagers, college student who can automate it, and people who eat dog food for dinner.

Maybe you’d watch commercials if they were interspersed with YouTube? videos? There’s some awfully funny stuff on www.YouTube.com, though some of it violates copyrights of companies like NBC, CBS, ABC, HBO, etc.

According to a Nielsen/NetRatings? Poll in February of this year, MSNVideo leads the pack with 9.2 million viewers, YouTube? comes in second with 9 million, Google Video with just over 6 million, and iFilm with 4.3 million. Video.Search.Yahoo.com had 3.8 million viewers/user in February…
but that will likely change now that Yahoo is joining the consumer-created video content game with the launch of Yahoo Video! http://video.yahoo.com - Yahoo has 203 million registered users on their other more-well-known Yahoo services, and they are hoping to bring many of those users over to their new Video site. The Yahoo Video site has a feature called “MyStudio?” that lets you upload and manage your content and share it with the world. They have RSS feeds (great for your iPod, Media Center, etc.), content channels for individual producers. Windows users will use the proprietary in-browser Yahoo player, and Mac users get to use the more ubiquitous Flash player technology.

Jeff: From SF Eley from Escape Pod: Another tip for recording: smile.
I’m not kidding. It changes the shape of your mouth, and therefore your tone, in a way that people naturally find more energetic and likeable. You’ll get more brightness and range. It also changes your own frame of mind, and impels you to have more fun, if you don’t fight it. You’ll enjoy yourself more; and therefore you’ll sound like you’re enjoying yourself more; and that predisposes your audience to enjoying themselves more too.
COM: Ok, lets try this. Here is me talking without smiling. “ “. Here’s me talking and smiling “ “. Can you tell the difference?
Yes, its a well-known technique used by radio folks for years. I used to have a little sign in the studio that said “Smile and relate.”
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Scott: If you can’t bring yourself to smile, maybe you should quit. Interesting thread at the Pickle: http://www.podcastpickle.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7530
IF you had to Quit your podcast and Join someone elses Podcast as a Co-Host who would that be?
Jeff: Intelligent Assistance has released Intellicaster, which it describes as a turnkey automated podcasting system for Mac OS X. Designed for TV and radio broadcasters, Intellicaster publishes podcasts without the need for human intervention. Prices start at $4,495.
Intellicaster combines Mac hardware and software to automatically record programming at specific time intervals, such as evening newscasts, or morning or afternoon programming. Users can delete commercials, and Intellicaster encodes the audio content for podcasting, uploads it, and publishes the programming. It can also substitute cleared commercials into the feed.
Intelligent Assistances has an arrangement with klickTab to link to klickTab’s Really Simple Syndication (RSS) commerce system which provides a paid subscription system — subscribers pay for episodes or shows much like they do with the iTunes Music Store.
COM: For $4500, I would hope that this is VERY turnkey
Scott: That’s CHEAP! - David Lawrence spoke at the NAB Meeting in vegas to folks who were interested in re-purposing content.
Jeff: NPR now has 313 podcasts listed at it’s site. This content comes from the national NPR network plus it’s network of local stations. They have also started a brand called ALT.NPR which offers original podcasting content.
COM: Go to NPR.org and check these out. NPR delivers great content and more deep that you will find anywhere and now has even more shows of interest from cooking to Justice Issues to travel exploration to health. Pretty cool stuff.

From SlashDot
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060523/ap_on_hi_te/google_video_ads
By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer
an AP story about Google’s plan to start distributing online video ads. From the article: “The video expansion, announced late Monday, will affect thousands of Web sites that rely on Google to post ads related to the surrounding material on a page. For instance, a news story about housing might prompt Google to display an ad for real estate agents. Google isn’t allowing the video ads to appear on its own Web site — a heavily trafficked destination that produced 58 percent of its $2.25 billion in revenue during the first three months of this year.”
“Those commercial snippets, usually consisting of a sentence or two, have accounted for the bulk of the $13.6 billion in revenue that has poured into Google during the past 4 1/4 years.”
Note: Google Video Ads are NOT ad insertion. They are Flash-video ads that will work much like the text ads work now. Also, the user will have to click on the video to start it. The video will not start by itself.

Boy, not a lot of posts in the thread yet. If you want a lot of responses and maybe even someone to pay for your entire room bill, post something like this:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Single 19-year-old female host of “Hotties On Fire” podcast seeking 30-55 year-old male podcaster to share hotel room in Ontario, CA at the Podcast Expo. Prefer overweight, balding, and socially clumsy individual who doesn’t mind letting me use the shower first in the morning. Must not be bothered by my girlfriends coming over late at night for slumber party, booze, and poker. Call (555) 555-HUSH

…and you don’t really need to reveal the truth until the roomate shows up at the hotel, and by then, it will be too late for him to change his plans.

==== Listener E-Mail=====
Hey guys! It’s great to hear that Jeff is joining Scott on the “Podcheck team.” I’ve been a PCR fan for quite awhile. Thank you for the commentary about Second Life. Boy, there’s a phenomenon I don’t get, but whatever…
All right, finally, let me remind you that I am the German-teacher Word Nerd. I’m glad you quoted my favorite German podcaster, Annik Rubens, about her podcast logo initiative. But guys…GUYS! We’ve got to get the name of her podcast right. She is the reigning Queen of podcasting in German-speaking central Europe. Go check the LibSyn Hott 100 list. Schlaflos in München was sitting cozily at number 1 for the first three weeks the list was up. #30 on the German iTunes Music Store list. She’s a big deal.So here’s a lesson in pronunciation of this title. (It translates in English to “Sleepless in Munich.”)Pronounce it like this: SHLOFF- (rhymes with English “doff,” like “doff your hat”) -loass (rhymes with “gross”) in MOON- (but ease up a little bit on the “oo” in “moon”) -chin (but don’t accent the word “chin”)“SHLOFFloass in MOONchin”Let me just say that the reason I started listening to PodCheck Weekly Review in the very first place was because early last June I heard Annik Rubens talking about it on Schlaflos in München.Y’all keep up the good work.Your pal,Dave Shepherd
