Podcheck Sunday 3/26/06
(Updated 3/27/06 9:42am to fix Comments posting bug) Longer show today at around 30 minutes, though we share the joy of a head cold! Warning! Dangerously scattered and incomplete show notes ahead!
Thanks, Random! Great “Wild Kingdom” bumper
Random also said “I wonder who actually remembers Marlin Perkins.
” - Now, let’s see how Jim is doing with the wild alligator. Sure looks like he has his hands full!”

Holy moly, been busy.
Voicework - If you ever go to Geneva Switzerland and ride one of the tour busses, you might hear my pre-recorded voice describing the sights. I slaughtered some of the French words, but we stupid Americans will never notice. It’s Jeaque Cluseau meets Jeaque Cousteau. (my French spelling sucks, too).

Still using MixCast Live today (Windows only!)
Tokyo Dan - http://www.whitokyo.com/ - asked in the comments at Podcheck.com - “So, What authoring tool do I prefer?”
I appreciate all of the suggestions to use PodProducer: Only three decks, fewer “instant play” buttons than CastBlaster, segue feature is too simple.

Congratulations to folks who are taking a stab at doing this podcasting thing full-time:
PodChick (http://www.podchick.com/) has announced that she is quitting her day job, relying on income through PodShow. She does 5-minute “Feel good about yourself and others” shows. Sure, that’s over-simplifying.
HUGE THANKS to Don from ScreenCastsOnline - He clicked the Donate button on the Podcheck Site: Next thing you know, I received a PayPal e-mail stating: This email confirms that you have received a payment of $20.00 USD from ScreenCastsOnline.

More network news: A company called PodTech just got 5.5 million in funding from Venrock, the venture capital arm of the Rockefeller family, as well as US Venture Partners and some other Angel investors in Silicon Valley. I’m still not really sure what they do, or why the need 5.5 million dollars to do what they do. They say ” With this financing we are now poised to deliver on our content development goals and to play a big role in the evolving ecosystem of this new media.” http://www.podtech.net/?p=409 Founder - John Furrier is a member of the Web 2.0 Workgroup, and is well-known (and according to Dave Winer, is well-liked) in the tech industry. Their flagship podcast is the InfoTalk podcast, focusing on Silicon Valley news. Some of the channels in the PodTech network include

I saw this post from Todd Cochrane over at the Podcast Pickle Forums - They “re-designed the techpodcasts.com website, during that time the membership application section was closed, I re-opened it yesterday with the new submission system which automates much of the processing of applications. NY Times has 18 podcasts link
They have 18 times more truthiness than the Peoria Journal Star.
Does that make the “NY Times” a podcast network?

Voice comment from Paul Berry from The Window to the Magic:
iTunes settings -

E-mail from Andy Bilodeau that Scott did not read in the show:
The issue with iTunes (that I find) is that it only downloads the most recent unplayed podcast. However, all the files are indeed listed from the feed. I rarely rely on iTunes to get podcasts correctly (I’m a skeptic) so I noticed that there were 2 unplayed shows in your feed last week, hence, I was able to listen to them consecutively in cronological, rather that iTunes misguided idea of order
Regarding my aversion to the Apple iPod, Andy goes on to say:
Dude… you must come to the dark side…iPod is the way… come join me and we will rule the world. Both Belkin and Griffin are working on something to take advantage of the 44.1 Khz recording ability of the new iPods…)
I couldn’t wait for the recording attachment so I got an iRiver 799 on ebay..for $76.00 and I totally dig it
————-
Another one from Bill Mackiewicz (that Scott did not read in the show):
“I did some checking on iTunes, and it looks like the options for podcasts are:
Check for new episodes (every hour/every day/every week/manually)
When new episodes are available (download all/download the most recent one/do nothing)
Keep (all episodes/all unplayed episodes/most recent episode/last (2,3,4,5,10) episodes)

Audio/Video is a great creative outlet for young folks - Mike, used to make home movies with an early toy video camera, the kind that used the audio cassettes! He used to make GI Joe movies in the woods. (with cool sound effects).

How leading podcast directories select their ‘featured podcasts’
link
Do they matter? Ask Scott Shepherd about Inside Mac Radio, and how he saw 10’s of thousands of new subscribers in the first few hours after the new iTunes podcast store was activated. Ask Scott Johnson about Extra Life Radio. Ask Christoph Marquardt about his Tops from the Top Floor.Podcheck was featured by Yahoo Podcasts (THANK YOU!) But I didn’t see any significant bump. Maybe 60 at the most. They still have 4 different feeds for the Podcheck Review. It’s interesting that a small directory like Dave Slusher’s AmigoFish can coalesce the various Podcheck Feed Addresses into one single listing, but a super-duper- media giant like Yahoo hasn’t responded to my notes about the problem. That sure beats my method of selecting - I don’t. Being a veteran listener, I have a very closed and sealed list of podcast subscriptions. I also have a very closed mind when it comes to listening to something new. It’s a shame, but also a reality. Like many busy people, I have 90 minutes a day to listen, and it’s not nearly enough time to listen to all of the good ones

According to the Consumer Electronics Association, a quarter of U.S. households own an MP3 player. Seventy-one percent of those households have children, roughly half of whom are 12 years old or younger. The Radio Adventure of Dr. Floyd, The SG Show with Sam and Steve, The Crazy Dave Show.I listen to shows, like David Lawrence’s Personal Netcast podcast, Adam Curry’s Daily Sourcecode (to stay current), and some others that are usually kid-friendly, but occassionally drop the F-bomb. I can’t keep up with all of the podcasts!!
Podzinger now searches Video!

Podzinger, a podcast search engine, now hunts down video files. It joins an increasingly crowded field of companies offering online video search, including AOL, Google, and Yahoo.

Founded by Kristpohper Smith and Todd Anderlik - The articles will be available online, as downloadable text files or as audio files. In some cases, they will be supplemented with video clips. According to the story, about 60 percent of the subscribers are from the United States so far.

From Joespeh K in Japan, regarding the shorter, live format:
Good to hear you again on the pod-o-sphere. And believe me, I’m following with interest your experiments in production methods.
Scott, of course, your voice sounds great anytime, but I have to say that the shorter formats don’t give anywhere near the satisfaction of your longer pieces with that crunchy “bit” in the middle. It’s your wit, clever production and voice together that does it for me.
Listening around to other podcasts, I’ve been recently hearing a degradation of content and focus. Many previously entertaining and informative podcasts I enjoyed have devolved into fast-paced off-topic chat shows, it seems. But, could it be that a degraded mass of chat will sink to the bottom and podcasts of quality content will be left standing for sponsors, advertisers and the like to embrace?
Stick with the quality combination, I implore you. You’ve got it, head and shoulders above the Daily Whatever Code, and the others, regardless of the big numbers they may have now.

================================Paul Berry from The Window to the Magic: “locked into the Apple thing?”– What I should have said was “I want a device that more tightly integrates with my Windows Media Center that runs my household’s entertainment experiences.”
I agree with you: the Apple iPod absolutely rocks, and the sheer number of accessories are enviable.

From a Skype conversation with Sebastiaan Van Dijk
