Last program description:

In today’s show, is that an iPod in your shoe, lots of Podcast Expo news, spying on other podcast subscriber numbers with Feedburner, and Scott takes a few minutes to correct some of the factual errors that he made in the last show!  We TRIED to keep it to w0 minutes, but… we… just… couldn’t… do it!

(Recorded Thursday, June 1st, 2006, but delayed due to lame, mundane technical gaffs.)

All of the carnage after the jump…

Jeff: Podtrac, a podcasting service provider, today announced it has developed the largest podcasting demographics database worldwide, with over 55,000 detailed demographic profiles, representing more than 22 million U.S. podcast listeners and viewers.

Podtrac also announced the findings from its most recent quarterly survey. According to their survey, over half (56%) of the podcast audience is listening and viewing podcasts on their computers, 46% on a portable device, and the vast majority (88%) listen or view the entire podcast episode.

“Accurate demographics are critical in order to engage advertising agencies and large brands to test market podcast advertising as a component of their media campaigns,” said Mark McCrery, CEO and Co-Founder of Podtrac.

COM: I listen to the entire show when the show show is :30 minutes or less. About 50% of the time, I listen to entire shows that are longer

OBS:Does this mean that it doesn’t matter where an ad placement is in the show?

This on the heals of the Podfade or Profit story, Marc predicting at least another 12 months of incubation before things really start gellin’ in the ad space.

Neat FeedBurner graph thingy:

Go to this link to give it a try!http://oneminutehowto.com/FeedburnerStats.asp?FA=&D=&S=20

Interesting note, many people don’t realize that their stats are viewable to the public via the Feedburner Awareness API. It came as a surprise to Leo Laporte last year, when he kinda flipped out about it. Rightly so - professionals (those who actually make a LIVING doing this broad/podcasting thing prefer to control their distribution numbers a bit more closely. Not because Leo has anything to hide, but because you can’t just look at a single raw statistic like “Feedburner subscribers” and think that you know how broad or narrow Leo’s reach is. The Feedburner stats reflect just one aspect of his distribution, and he wouldn’t want anyone to misinterpret that single statistic.

Podcheck, on the other hand, is a pure-play podcast, so the Feedburner stats tell most of the story. Here is the link to Podcheck’s graph.

You can sure see the effect that our mini-hiatii have on the subscription numbers. There was a peato increase (or at least remain the same) as our frequency increases… but then, it really doesn’t matter how many people listen. I know that the people that do listen deserve the same quality of show regardless of how many people are listening.

Really can see on the graph when Dave Winer linked to a Podcheck post about the Kieth and the Girl Podshow contract thing, and then the numbers trail off as people get tired of waiting for the next post or podcast. I expect that subscribership number will go up and down over time. I don’t really pay attention to it.

Jeff: What is going on with Feedburner statistics? Is this a case of a very few podcasts getting really popular fast or some bad numbers. For example,

Name 1/19/06 6/2/06 Factor

Maccast 12508 60615 4.8

Catholic Insider 3055 53413 17.5

Cinecast 3741 56309 15.1

Escape Pod 2605 55074 21.1

————————-

Josh In Japan 1642 1402 0.8

Illinoise 499 521 1.0

Podcheck Review 701 651 0.9

Also, check out this graph. It is a plot of the nubmer of subscribers of the top 100 podcasts. You would expect the curve to be a very smooth convex curve, yet this one is just plain weird looking. For example, it suggests that the top 23 podcasts have at least 51,000 subscribers, yet right after those top 23 the number of subscribers immediately dives down to 10,000 up until rank 38, then after that it immediately goes to below 1,000.

Scott - One of the keys to increasing your listenership is promotion - word of mouth is best, but random exposure isn’t bad either. Rob Walsh and Mur Lafferty talk about promoting your podcast in their new book, on sale now at Amazon.com - Secrets of the Podcast Masters, with a foreward by Senator Dean Edwards, no less. Congrats to them for publishing the bok, and I beleive that I am quoted in the bok or something. I’m sure it was something totally lame that will cause my grandchildren to disavow any relation to me.

Scott: For a limited time, AmigoFish is offering a special deal for podcasters and vloggers. You can submit an ad to appear in the right sidebar. This will be targetted, though, and will only appear for the people who are predicted to like your show (ie, predicted to have a 3 star or greater rating for your show.) There are more complex algorithms available, however not in the special podcaster deal. Any user of AmigoFish can request a free trial of 1000 impressions of this special podcast ad. However, with great power comes great responsibility. Read all of the details here:

http://www.amigofish.com/catcher/podcast_ad/podcast_ad_offer/

So far, the Podcheck ad has been served 379 impressions. I guess I should have asked the gals from The Total Hotties podcast to pose for a picture for the ad instead of the good ol’ Podcheck Logo.=============

Jeff: A California state appeals court ruled in favor of the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s (EFF’s) petition on behalf of three online journalists Friday, deciding that the online journalists have the same right to protect the confidentiality of their sources as offline reporters do.
In their decision, the judges wrote: “We can think of no workable test or principle that would distinguish ‘legitimate’ from ‘illegitimate’ news. Any attempt by courts to draw such a distinction would imperil a fundamental purpose of the First Amendment, which is to identify the best, most important, and most valuable ideas not by any sociological or economic formula, rule of law, or process of government, but through the rough and tumble competition of the memetic marketplace.”

COM: Yes he really used the word memetic. I guess that’s the kind of rhetoric you get when you are appealing to journalists! For those of you curious, memetic is the science of studying memes. Oh Brother! A meme refers to any unit of cultural information which one mind transmits (verbally or by demonstration) to another mind. So I guess a ‘memetic marketplace’ is one where ‘news’ is considered to be whatever is popular.

Jeff: For our Canadian listeners, Canada’s first comprehensive podcasting survey is underway, and is looking for input.

The study is aimed at discovering what is happening with podcasting in Canada; audience sizes and characteristics, popular podcasts and topics, audience demographics, and more.

To participate in the survey and to be entitled to receive a highlighted summary of the results, visit the Canadian Podcast Listeners’ Survey website. The survey will be open until May 26, 2006.

COM: So help ‘em out, eh, hoser?

Jeff: And in the area of quotes with no obvious hidden agenda’s Steve Jobs said the following “You know, you keep on innovating, you keep on making better stuff, and if you always want the latest and greatest, then you have to buy a new iPod at least once a year.”

COM: Well, I’m shocked

Jeff: Nike and Apple have announced a partnership bringing the worlds of sports and music together with the launch of Nike+iPod products. The first product developed through this partnership is the Nike+iPod Sport Kit, a wireless system that allows Nike+ footwear to talk with aniPod nano.

COM: I talked about this with some athletic friends and they thought the idea was very cool. I would be interested in a connection to a bike computer as well. I think that the general idea is that you could get biometric feedback (heartrate, pace, speed, etc..) transferred verbally to your headphones while listening to music.

Scott: This is likely also related to Apple’s patent for the “Audio Interface” for portable media players. Tim Burquin’s Endurance Radio podcast will likely be watching this Nike story very closely. If you’re into endurance sports, you’d best check out http://www.enduranceradio.com/

…and that’s all for part 1.  We close with a song from Black Lab - See the Sun.
